Heartburn is caused by acidy and spicy foods. Many people suffer from it, but turn to over the counter heartburn medications instead of safe natural effective remedies like herbals teas. There are a few different kinds of herbal teas out there to help treat and relieve heartburn such as slippery elm, licorice root, and peppermint.

For those of you who do not understand what heartburn is it is a condition where the acid from the stomach flows up towards the esophagus which causes a burning and stinging sensation. The acid from the stomach that enters the esophagus eats slowly away at the lining of it making it weak and even destroying it. Heartburn is caused by eating food containing high amounts of fat, alcohol, salt, and acids. There are several ways to treat heartburn, but the best ways are the natural ways such as herbal teas like I mentioned.

One of the best herbal teas to drink for treating and relieving heartburn is slippery elm tea.

Slippery Elm comes from a deciduous tree that grows here in North America. The red sticky bark of the tree is what is used for making the herbal tea that helps soothe and ease heartburn symptoms naturally. The reason slippery elm can help soothe heartburn is because it contains an active constituent in it called, “mucilage.” Mucilage helps for a slim gel like substances that is able to coat the esophagus during heartburn so the acid has a harder time creating that burning and stinging sensation that is usually known as heartburn. The way to make slippery elm tea is by boiling a pot of water on top of the stove and placing 2 tablespoon spoons of dried slippery elm bark into a cup. After the water boils you simply pour the boiling water into the cup with the slippery elm and allow it to settle and steep for 5 minutes to draw out the healing properties. Then all you do is sip slowly until you heartburn has gone away.

Another herbal tea that helps treat and relieve heartburn is licorice root tea. Licorice root grows in countries such as Greece, Asia, and Turkey. It is a long green leave filled bush. The main part of the bush that is used is the root. The root contains an acid in it called glycyrrhizin which helps stimulates mucus production. The more mucus formed the better protected your esophagus is from heartburn. The best time to drink licorice root tea to prevent heartburn is before you eat dinner and than again after dinner. The way to make licorice root tea is by taking 1 licorice root tea bag and place it in a tea cup and than take some boiling water and pour it over the tea bag. After allow the licorice root tea to brew for 5 to 10 minutes until it is a golden brown or yellowish color. Then sip on the tea slowly until it is gone.

Peppermint tea is another wonderful herbal tea to drink for relieving heartburn symptoms. Peppermint tea is made from dried peppermint leaves. Peppermint leaves contain menthol in it which helps provide a cooling soothing sensation in the esophagus and digestive system when you are suffering from heartburn. Peppermint leaves also contains muscle relaxant properties to it that help relax the stomach muscles preventing them to contract and push the acid content up towards the esophagus. This means peppermint tea can help prevent heartburn if sipped on before dinner time. However, you can sip on peppermint tea after a meal to help relieve heartburn. The way you make peppermint tea is by taking a peppermint tea bag and placing it into a cup and pouring some boiling water over it. After allow the peppermint tea to steep until it forms a golden color. After all you do is sip on the tea to prevent or relieve heartburn symptoms.

So next time you are suffering from heartburn reach for a cup of herbal tea to help relieve your heartburn instead of those nasty over the counter heartburn medicines. I wish you all the very best of luck with preventing, treating, and relieving your heartburn naturally.
